ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE FROM AN ANTHROPOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE

Description: The rapid expansion of AI into the field of human and social studies, as well as into related educational and educational practices, has significantly enriched discussions on the processes of socio-technological integration and the associated cognitive, epistemological and pedagogical challenges. Over the past 3–4 years, the analysis of AI’s impact on the social sciences, humanities and education has evolved from a relatively narrow, issue- and topic-specific niche into a broad field of professional reflection on the possibilities and limitations of using neural networks in academic settings and higher education. Considering and systematising the diverse perspectives and case studies regarding the role of AI in the social sciences and humanities (as well as expert assessments, predictions that have come true and those that have not, etc.) are seen as complex and fascinating tasks, which are entirely consistent with a comprehensive analysis of the material in line with contemporary anthropological studies. At the session, we propose to outline methods for theoretical and applied research into various — professional and “quasi-professional” — reactions to the development of AI, based on an interpretation of the latter as a kind of “quintessence of uncertainties” (technological, legal, economic, etc.). An additional focus of the session’s work could be the “reconfiguration” of the dialogue between anthropologists and representatives of other disciplines, in light of the prevailing view of AI as a “post-disciplinary” phenomenon.
