ETHNICITY THROUGH THE LENS OF COGNITIVE SOCIAL SCIENCES

Description: The cognitive social sciences – anthropology, economics and, in recent decades, sociology – drawing inspiration from the cognitive revolution of the 1960s, aim to reintroduce thought and perception into the explanation of social phenomena. Within this framework, models are developed in which patterns of thought are explained by characteristics of social structure and culture, and vice versa. Methodological integration is also taking place, prompting a re-evaluation of the familiar toolkit of social scientists. In this context, research into ethnicity, on the one hand, embarked on the path of cognitivisation quite early on, and in the works of representatives of the Manchester School, as well as Fredrik Barth, the focus on perception is quite pronounced; on the other hand, it was never explicitly cognitivised. In 2004, an article by one of the field’s key theorists, Rogers Brubaker, entitled “Ethnicity as Cognition” was published; it proposed drawing on the resources of cognitive science and the cognitive social sciences to resolve pressing problems in the field, yet this call was not taken seriously. In recent years, however, work has been underway in Russian anthropology and sociology to implement the agenda described above – empirical research is being conducted, and descriptions, models and tools are being developed at the intersection of the cognitive and social sciences. In the summer of 2026, a special issue of the journal *Sociology of Power* (RSCI, Scopus) will be published, dedicated to the cognitive turn in the study of ethnicity. This issue was compiled on the basis of Section 16 of the Congress of Russian Anthropologists and Ethnologists, held the previous year. During Session IV of the Tomsk Anthropological Forum, it is proposed to continue the work already underway. Researchers of ethnicity and related issues are invited to participate, particularly those working within a constructivist and/or cognitive research framework, using innovative research methods and seeking to address questions of ethnicity whilst recognising that it is viewed not as a thing in the world, but as a way of looking at the world. We welcome papers based on research that explicitly utilises the 4E framework, focuses on cultural/social cognitive schemas, and explores the role of emotions in ethnic processes. We invite contributions from anthropologists and sociologists, as well as historians, psychologists, cognitive scientists and all other researchers for whom interdisciplinary work is important.
